Most of a decade in the Republic of Ireland

I lived in Ireland for a total of about 8½ years, during the first decade of the 21st century.

In early summer 2001 I was in Seville, Spain. I had lost my job, was running out of money, and had moved out of my apartment. Staying with an ex-housemate, I met an Irishman who didn't have any money either. We talked a lot.

I had gone to Seville on a whim, anyhow, leaving Amsterdam — where I'd gone without much purpose. Calvin didn't encourage me to go to Ireland, but I'm sure he knew that I was ready to go anywhere next. Our conversations led me to an obvious conclusion.

In Dublin from June until late August, I then passed through Galway for a couple of weeks before traveling to Kilkenny in September. There, I got a job (and a tax number) and met friends.

I was in the Republic until May of 2011 except for a year-and-a-half.

In August of 2003 I went to Nijmegen the Netherlands to be with a Dutch girl I'd met in County Kerry. In January of 2005, I returned to Ireland and Kilkenny.

I was in Cork city from June 2009 until August 2010, at which time I returned to Kilkenny, where I stayed until I returned to the States.
