The Pope, the President, and modern science

August 2003 —

The Bible on GM food

No less an advocate than the Holy See has come out in favor of genetically modified food. The Pope [John Paul II] has cited the book of Genesis, noting that according to this document, God entrusted humans with the planet Earth.

The Vatican noted, reasonably, that GM foods could alleviate the starvation that is one of humans' great problems. It did not display any recognition [of the fact] that the book of Genesis was written at a time when organized agriculture was itself the dawning technology.

Conservative thinking

The conservative think-tank Competetive Enterprise Institute has sued the U.S. government, asking it to stop distributing a report concerning Global Warming. Conservative think-tank. I don't think I'm even going to comment on that one.

Conservative science

The Bush administration "has manipulated the scientific process and distorted or suppressed scientific findings," — report by the minority staff of the House Committee on Government Reform.
