Someone among any group of the bilingual will always ask you "do you understand this" in English when you're listening to conversation in their language.
There's always one — somebody who needs to know how much you're getting of what other people are saying, and must ask you in the language you're not trying to learn.
Any comprehension is disturbed, intuitive thinking is broken, and there's no good answer. It's a rude question in the wrong language.
