You are probably more comfortable believing that "Polish is a difficult language."

One of the best encouragements I've ever had about language was in fact a statement by a Polish man. Coincidence, that is, but apt. I was talking with him in Cafe Levies, in the old Santa Cruz disctrict of old Seville, Spain, in early 2001.

I'm sure I was only trying to make small-talk. That's not my greatest skill. I said to him I'd heard Polish was difficult. "Every language is difficult," he said.

Which may not sound like an encouragement. But it is.

You just have to think about it in the right way.

And I do.

And that's why I am going to learn Polish, while you are not.
