• Pope John Paul II was in the Netherlands in 1985. Many consider this trip the worst of his career — and he travelled extensively. In Utrecht his entourage faced protest and riot.

• The Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie was an upgrade to the national military floodplain system, whereby a new segment incorporated the city of Utrecht, regained from France after the fall of Napoleon.
