The night of 31 January 1953, southwest Netherlands —

Driven southward in the funnel-shaped North Sea by powerful wind, and lifted incrementally by the low atmospheric pressure associated with storms, water breached and overtook the dikes and flooded 165,000 hectares (640 square miles) of Zuid-Holland, Zeeland and Noord-Brabant.
