Laura's husband's presidency

The First Lady likes poetry

— Nice poetry.

America, February 2003

First Lady Laura Bush abruptly canceled a poetry symposium that had been planned for February 12th, because she got word that some scheduled attendees were planning to read anti-war poetry.

A spokesperson for Ms. Bush said that "while Mrs. Bush respects the right of all Americans to express their opinions, she, too, has opinions and believes it would be inappropriate to turn a literary event into a political forum."

The symposium was to celebrate, or—how else to say it?... The symposium was to have something to do with Walt Whitman, amongst a couple of other poets.

Laura Bush appears surprised that anyone would want to express a political opinion at her shindig.

"There's nothing political about American literature. Everyone can like American literature, no matter what your party." — Ms. Bush, October 2002
