Dean Bruer died alone in a motel room with material that inculpated him in the sexual abuse of kids.
Bruer was a regional overseer in a tiny Christian sect that calls itself "the Truth." This organization is known to the public and media as the "2x2's." Dean Bruer's infamy is the reason that the public knows about it.
The material was gone by the time police got custody of his phone and laptop nine months later. But several people had seen it, and this itself was enough evidence to spark investigation into the criminality. It opened up the conversation, induced further accusations, and put the church into freefall.
Bruer died June 2022. In March 2023 the "Doyle letter" circulated. This was an administrative attempt to manage a crisis of emerging information.
But the problem wasn't manageable, because it was endemic. Dean Bruer was criminally guilty, but he wasn't he only one. He was just the one who started the investigation.
