  Dean Bruer

Dean Bruer died alone in a motel room with material that proved him guilty in the sexual abuse of kids.

Bruer was a regional overseer in a tiny Christian sect that calls itself "The Truth." This organization is known to the public and media as the "2x2's." The story of Dean Bruer is the only reason that the public knows anything about it.

The material on his phone and laptop was gone by the time police got custody nine months later. But several people had seen it, and this was enough to spark investigation.

It opened up the conversation, induced further accusations, and put the church into freefall.

Bruer died June 2022. In March 2023 the "Doyle letter" circulated. This was an administrative attempt to manage a crisis of emerging information.

But the problem wasn't manageable. It was endemic. Dean Bruer was criminally guilty, but he wasn't he only one. He was just the one whose case began the investigation and the collapse of the church.
