Hastert blames Dems for Foley scandal

"(House* speaker [Dennis]) Hastert sought to blame Democrats1 for leaking sexually explicit computer instant messages between [Mark] Foley and former pages from 2003."

— Forbes, 3 October 2006

Representative Mark Foley (R-Florida) communicated sexual intentions via email with boys who were working in the House of Representatives as "pages."

A page is a traditional role within the House of Representatives — a role that is nearly as old as the union of the States. The page, a partisan youth of generally about 16 years old, serves to deliver documents an perform other nonspecialized duties.

Foley, in a addition to his role as a representative, served as the head of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children.

* The House of Representatives is one of two branches of United States Congress (the other being the Senate.)
