Warm beer in the Netherlands

You can barely find cold beer in the Netherlands, in the grocery store. In my town,* Nijmegen, I know of only one place that has a few beers in a small section of a refrigerator. All of the good beer is warm. All of the Belgian beer is warm.

The reason for this is the same as the reason that the Dutch don't make good beer— you shouldn't be drinking it anyway. If you don't like it, that should be a lesson to you. The Dutch, generally, are moderate in the extreme.

It is perfectly fine to drink a glass of beer in the afternoon, at a café. That's normal. Two, maybe. But the glasses are tiny. Moderation.

If you want to take a few bottles home, you have two obvious courses of action: plan ahead, or drink the first one warm.
