A bit of Dutch

I've lived in the Netherlands for a total of about two years.* I've attempted to educate myself about the language during these times, and I remain interested in het Nederlands.

• Some good Dutch words...

• The Dutch don't appreciate coarse language....

• The "New Spelling" of the Dutch language, 1996...

English for the Dutch...

• "No offense but
youre Dutch quite a few flaws...." — a comment in my guestbook, August 2005

• I refused to speak English at the grocer today. — 18 December 2004

De, het; two words for "the" — September 2004

Gedogen: active tolerance — May 2004

Eet smakelijk — the ubiquitous European "enjoy your meal" that does not really translate into English.... — 12 april 2004

Alstublieft: "if it pleases you." A hyperpolite and useful word and social custom — March 2004

• Dutch, notoriously difficult — difficult or just notorious? Spring 2004

• I tried to learn Dutch the first time I lived in Holland, Winter 2000

• "English is basically simplified French" — a Dutch person, November 2000...
